The beauty of the everydayJewellery designer Ted Noten likes to keep it simple. His designs are characterised by small innovations, made with humour and irony. A coffee cup sliced, a dinner service stacked up, a Mercedes sawn into thousands of brooches, a revolver cast in a transparent ladies’ bag. Ted Noten works with all manner of materials, always doing his best to bend them to his will. This is a major aspect of his work. His favourite material is gold; it is cooperative and easily moulded. He does not use iron, as he cannot stand its odour, and he uses diamonds only as an occasional ironic commentary. Two years ago, Ted Noten won the biennial Harry Tillie prize for independent designers. And deservedly so, we believe, as his work is original and often extremely beautiful. And on show at The Frozen Fountain until 26 December. |
